Sea Calm

Instrumentation: Flute, Bass Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano

Duration: 4 min

About the Work

Sea Calm is made with musical material that I composed back in 2012 and 2014 for a student song cycle of mine, A Note for Andrea. The song cycle was very much a student piece that had a few successful moments, so I wanted those moments to have a life of their own separate from the songs. Sea Calm is an arrangement of some of those instrumental moments. The title of the piece is taken from the title of one of the poems that I had set to music in the song cycle, Sea Calm by Langston Hughes.

How still,
How strangely still
The water is today,
It is not good
For water
To be so still that way.
